Battle Stations!
The October Chirk Training day (CTD) was a challenge as both beginner and advanced fly fishers fought the conditions to improve their skills. To accompany the cool Autumn temperature there was a howling, swirling wind that added a different dimension to the concept of line control. In addition to battling the conditions, there were one or two running battles between the attendees too.
Husband and wife team George and Janet are neck and neck in their quest to land the first trout. George has already connected with a couple but Janet is adopting a less obvious approach and has decided to focus initially on style and elegance. Next month should see this epic battle settled once and for all!
Beginners and CTD first-timers Phil and Rod whilst not in direct competition, were both looking for a first fish. Phil subsequently decided to concentrate on understanding the rod mechanics for most of the afternoon whilst Rod (armed with new rod) launched an all out attack on the Oak pools residents! Rods new rod was tested thoroughly as he went on to connect with 9 fish but those rubber hooks he was sold were his undoing! No fish to the net but a herculean effort!
Father and son Paul and Joe renewed their rivalry on the water and this time dad (Paul) emerged victorious showing young whipper-snapper Joe that there is still life in the old boy yet! Some excellent cast though Joe!
Father and son-in-law John and Steve also fought neck and neck and ended up with the same number of landed fish for the day. There was nothing to separate them in the end so after a stewards enquiry, the decision went to Steve who was adjudged to have landed the days largest fish. A great day again. Thanks to Shaun, Becky and Jules for lunch and all the attendees for their input.
