Tonight a few of the Chirk Training Day regulars met up to fish the evening rise at Chirk fishery.
The training days usually finish at around 4pm but on those hot, bright summer days, the fishing can be tough.
Whats more frustrating is that as we pack up and the day cools, we often see the fish start to feed more heavily. By the time the clients have left and the gates are locked, I can see the fish going bananas in my rear view mirror as I drive away! (I’ve seen that happen with people too…)
So, we thought, why not invite a few regulars to come and enjoy the ‘fish bounty’ that is the Evening Rise at Chirk?
Up until around 8pm it stayed hot and bright and there was a flat calm on the lakes. Not ideal but we were able to tempt a few with Sedge and Buzzer patterns. As the sun started to set and the temperature cooled, the fish became steadily more active. The air filled with insects and the water boiled with rising fish… But we couldn’t catch them!
Experienced anglers tried every approach and dozens of fly patterns but the Trout were clearly locked on to something that we were unable to imitate.
I personally love this type of challenge, watching the fish feed so voraciously and still not being able to catch them is a real puzzle. Sadly, not every member of the party shared my opinion!
Needless to say, fish to the net were scarce but very, very welcome!
