Another great turnout again at Chirk Fishery for the Heyday School of Fly Fishing. Our guests were male and female, beginners to advanced and from 16 years old to 81 years young! A truly mixed bunch, proving this sport is for everyone and it was an absolute pleasure to be involved with each and every one of you. Newcomers to Fly Fishing quickly became familiar with the Roll & Overhead Casts, whilst the good old boys from Hoylake Fly Fishers put some graft in to improve their distance casting. One Gent stepped up to the challenge of Double Hauling for the first time and did very well indeed. The advanced members of the group spent time discussing and thinking through the mechanics of particular casts that they were aiming to improve, progress is certainly slower at this level as they are fine tuning their techniques to achieve the perfect casts. I think Bill nailed it with his comment at lunch time “Casting, Fishing and BBQ Lunch, what more do you need” I struggled to comment at the time as I was gorging on the potato salad! Massive thanks to our hosts Shaun, Beckie & Jules. With perfect fishing conditions in the morning, a light wind putting a nice ripple on the water and good cloud cover we had the feeling we were in for a great afternoon…Right up to the point where the wind dropped and there wasn’t a cloud to be seen! Undeterred the team were eager to start Fishing and put the mornings casting tuition to good use. Although conditions weren’t great the Dry Fly was successful and with fish feeding just under the surface John Medcalf’s superbly tied Buzzer patterns in sizes 18 & 20 did the business for more than a few rods on the day.
