Today’s Chirk training day was a Tale of two Charlie’s. Old Charlie was so inspired by the tale of young Charlie’s recent 1 and a half pound Sea Trout that he broke with tradition and started fishing as soon as he hit the water. We were alerted to his dissent by the splashing of the 1lb Rainbow Trout he was playing. After being reacquainted with the etiquette of the Chirk training days (and a quick lesson on Sea Trout habitat) old Charlie had his Sedge snipped and confiscated and was encouraged to rejoin the casting ranks.
The rest of the attendees dutifully observed the usual format by spending the first part of the day improving their casting skills. Newcomers Alan, Andrew, Keith, Terry and young Charlie got to grips with the Roll and Overhead casts whilst the more experienced group of Eric, New Jim, old (and disgraced) Charlie, Mike, Dave, John and Chiara got some help fine tuning the casts they have been working on recently.
Our hosts Shaun, Becky and the ever busy Jules again provided us with a beautiful al fresco lunch and after a quick look at the ‘Bug Station’ set up by John and Chiara, we all selected appropriate flies and went in search of rainbows.
As the day progressed the conditions became more challenging and the forecasted cool, cloudy afternoon turned out hot, sunny and very breezy. Never the less, fish were caught and everybody managed to tempt if not hook and land fish. Top rod was Eric with 6 fish with John and Chiara not far behind. Good angling considering the weather! A special thanks to the regulars for helping out and recognising the requirements of the beginners.
